EARLY LIFE
In the summer of 1998, Li Hongyi was born into an ordinary family in Liaoyang, Liaoning Province. His parents were often away on business. Due to the family's poor financial situation, Hongyi was sent to a technical school in Dalian to study automotive repair when he was in his early teens. In 2012, his older brother Li Minglin brought him to Beijing in pursuit of a career in the entertainment industry. The two of them lived together in a small rented room.
In 2013, SM Entertainment Co., Ltd. from South Korea held auditions in Beijing. Hongyi’s mother and brother seized the opportunity and signed him up. Hongyi was selected and went to South Korea for a three-month training. However, due to various reasons, he ultimately chose to forgo the opportunity to train in South Korea and subsequently returned to China.

In July 2014, Hongyi participated in the lifestyle role-swapping reality show "X-Change" and was featured in the episode "Youth". This episode became the most viewed episode in 8 years since the show started and Hongyi’s Weibo followers rapidly increased to ~1million from just ~40 before the show aired.
Shortly after gaining fame, Hongyi began to star in many movies and series..
